The city of Meridian was named a Tree City USA at a recent "Celebration of Trees" awards luncheon at the Natural Science Museum. Meridian is one of only 26 cities in the state qualifying for the recognition. This marks the 12th year Meridian has been included in the listing.
The Tree City USA program has four requirements: 1) a city tree board or forestry department; 2) a city tree ordinance; 3) an urban forest management program supported by a minimum budget of $2 per capita; and 4) a citywide observance and proclamation of Arbor Day.
Tree City USA is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation and administered in the state by the Mississippi Forestry Commission with assistance from the Mississippi Urban Forest Council.
