In playoff baseball, clutch hitting and precision pitching almost always make the difference between winning and losing. The Meridian High Wildcats learned that lesson the hard way, as the Forest Hill Rebels had more than enough of both of those as they came in to John Moss Field and blitzed the Cats 11-5 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.
RAYMOND Meridian Community College ran a strong second Thursday in the Region 23 track meet which was held on the Hinds Community College campus. Hinds racked up 87 points to win the meet. MCC finished second with 57 points while Jones Junior College notched 16 points and Holmes tabbed nine.
Some things that are not taken care of when the opportunity arises can come back and add up in a big way. Just ask the Clarkdale Bulldogs. The Bulldogs hosted Lumberton in the second round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association's Class 2A state baseball playoffs Thursday night and found themselves falling 5-2 in the first game of the best-of-three series.

The top-ranked Meridian Community College Eagles continued to roll on a rainy Saturday afternoon at MCC Field, sweeping the visiting Bossier Parish Community College Cavaliers in a Miss-Lou conference doubleheader. Drew Johnson turned in a dominating performance on the mound in the opener. The MCC right-hander allowed just two hits as the Eagles blanked the Cavaliers 3-0 to win the Miss-Lou Conference Championship.
LOUISVILLE Braxton Whitehead's two-run homer opened the scoring and Southern Mississippi took advantage of four home runs in a 14-1 victory at Louisville on Saturday. Whitehead was a former standout at Meridian Community College. Whitehead hit his 14th homer of the season in the first inning for Southern Miss, which never trailed while breaking a three-game losing streak, its longest of the season. Jeremy Schied had four hits and drove in four runs, including a two-run singled in the second inning that made it 4-0. Schied also added two doubles and a two-run homer in the eighth inning, when Jeremy Albritton also hit a three-run shot.

OXFORD Ole Miss pitcher Tom Luke never expected to walk nine batters in one game. And he sure never expected to walk nine batters and win a baseball game. But when you team scores 15 runs, which the Rebels did Sunday in a 15-5 Southeastern Conference win over Auburn, a problems such as wildness is easily overlooked. The Rebels, who took two-of-three from the Tigers for the series, benefited from two big innings five runs in the first and nine in the fifth. And they pounded out 18 hits here at Oxford-University Stadium.

Peter Davidson
Peter Davidson is seeking to run his way to some medals at the State Track and Field meet in the middle of May.
Davidson is a contender in three events, the 5A Boys 3,200, 1,600 and 800 meter runs.
Davidson, a junior, won two divisional titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. He clocked a 4:41 in the 1,600 run and a 10:47 in winning the 3,200. He was fourth in the 800 run at 2:12.
Davidson prepared for his junior season of track and cross country running by competiting in Australia last summer.
