Busy week on tap for golf, tennis and track teams

The busiest week of spring sports in the Meridian Star coverage area begins today with divisional track and tennis events throughout the area.
The top event in town will be the Division 5 5A and 4A track meet which begins today at noon at Meridian Community College.
Class 5A
The Meridian High Wildcats and Lady Wildcats are the host team in the Division 5-5A meet. Defending 5A state champion Brandon tops the field along with Meridian, Wayne County and Natchez. Track fans will get a treat as one of the world's top sprinters will run in the 5A meet in Natchez' Janice Davis. (see related story on B3). The Wildcat tennis team will host the Division 5 Tournament on Thursday at 2 p.m. Meridian is 8-3 on the season and is led by standout No. 1 singles player David Ray who is 11-0 on the year and was a 5A finalist in last year's meet.
Class 4A
The Division 5-4A Tennis Tournament is set for Thursday at 9 a.m. at Jones Junior College.
According to Quitman coach Donna Gunning, seven teams are entered. They include: Quitman, Northeast Lauderdale, Florence, Magee, Mendenhall, West Jones and Northeast Jones.
The Division 5-4A golf tournament is set for Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Briarwood Country Club. Northeast Lauderdale is the host team.
Class 3A
The Division 5-3A track meet will begin today at 1 p.m. at Carthage High School. Carthage, Philadelphia and Newton County are entered.
Field events and the sprints preliminaries will be held today. The finals for the sprints and the remainder of the running events will be on Thursday.
The Division 5-3A golf tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m., at the Philadelphia Country Club.
The Division 5-3A tennis tournament is set for Thursday and will begin in the morning at the Northeast Complex in Meridian. Newton County will serve as the host team.
The field for the tournament includes West Lauderdale, Newton County, Carthage and Philadelphia.
Class 2A
The Division 5-2A track and field meet will also be in Carthage. Field events and preliminaries will be run today at 1 p.m.
The field will include Newton, Scott Central, William &Sullivan, Kemper County and South Leake.
The Division 5-2A golf tournament is set for Copiah Lincoln's Willow Hollow Golf Course for next Monday. Newton will battle Loyd Star, Wesson, McLaurin and Jackson St. Joe.
The Division 5-2A tennis tournament will be held Friday at the Palm Ridges Tennis Courts in Jackson. Newton is entered along with Taylorsville, Bay Springs, Piney Woods, Wesson and Loyd Star.
Class 1A
The Union Yellow Jackets will be busy with all three sports.
The Union golf team will head to the Louisville Country Club for the division tournament on Monday. Noxapater, Union, Nanih Waiya and Sebastopol are entered.
The division tennis tournament is set for Ridgeland. Union is entered along with Calhoun City, French Camp, St. Aloysius and Greenville St. Joe.
The divisional track meet is set for Madison Central this week.
