East Franklin to sponsor triathlon

EAST FRANKLIN – East Franklin Junior High School has provided a unique way for local children and their parents to engage in a healthy lifestyle.
The second annual East Franklin Triathlon will be Saturday, Oct. 25 at the school with free registration at 8:30 a.m. and events from 9 a.m. until noon for both children and adults.
Charlotte Williams, child nutrition manager at East Franklin, said the idea originated from one of the school's teachers.
"Wyatt Hutcheson came up with the idea last year because we're promoting healthy action for kids," Williams said.
Last year more than 30 adults and children participated in the triathlon, which includes a bicycle ride, run and walk.
The adult events include a 2.5-mile bike ride at 10 a.m. and 2.5-mile run at 11 a.m. Children's events include a 1-mile walk/run at 9 a.m., bike ride at 9:30 a.m. and sack race, tug-of-war and relay games at 10 a.m.
"I think the kids really enjoyed it, probably even more than the adults," Williams said. "Everybody will get a certificate for participating and anybody in the community is welcome to come.
"This not a fundraiser – we just want to get kids more active and healthy."
For more information, contact Williams at 331-2437.
