The Wagon Wheel rolls on

By Staff
Kim West
Many businesses have come and and gone in downtown Russellville thanks to a fluctuating local economy and the growth of businesses on U.S. 43.
But The Wagon Wheel, a ladies'clothing store located at 108 Jackson Ave. N., has been open for the past 35 years and operated by the same owner, Annette Sturdivant.
Sturdivant read a notice in the local newspaper that promoted opening a business and within a week, she opened her own store, which is known regionally for its up-to-date fashions for a variety of ages.
"I think we've stayed opened through our loyal customers," said Sturdivant, who has decided to sell her business to spend more time with her family. "We have been doing business with some people for years, and they're like family to us."
In addition to personal service, Sturdivant's shop offers alterations and special orders. She goes to market four times a year to buy inventory for each season, and often relies on advice from her longtime assistant and cousin, Lynda Mayfield.
"There are a lot of things I sell that I don't wear," said Sturdivant. "I'm conservative – Lynda is more flamboyant and she chooses differently from me."
