Horsemen and horsewomen are invited to learn and experience how to handle a horse properly this weekend at the second annual Craig Cameron Cowboy Boot Camp at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center.
Cameron, a 12-year professional rodeo cowboy, rancher and cattleman, will be in Meridian Friday through Sunday.
Known as the "Cowboy Clinician," Cameron uses a philosophy of teaching that eliminates the rough handling of horses.
Cameron travels more than 44 weeks a year, covering more than 80,000 miles demonstrating the style of horsemanship he has perfected in the last 20 years.
Traveling and working out of his Bluff Dale, Texas, Ranch he starts hundreds of colts each year, as well as teaching horsemanship clinics on reining, starting horses on cattle, problem solving and ranch camps to develop cowboy skills.
Participants in the three-day camp will learn to control a horse's speed, how to stop a horse and how to do turnarounds. Students will participate in games and trotting contests. There will also be daily trail rides and Cameron himself will demonstrate how to break a colt that has never been saddled.
Cameron has been a regular for many years at the National Cowboy Symposium, Canadian National Finals Rodeo, Midwest Agriland Farm Show, Minnesota Horse Expo and the Tulsa Farm Show.
He has trained horses for such celebrities as Ralph Lauren, Michael Martin Murphy and Red Adair.
With his wife and business manager, Dalene, Cameron hosts a dozen small clinics a year on their 150-acre property on the Paluxy River near Stephenville, Texas.
Cameron has a philosophy when it comes to horses.
