McCall still chasing his dreams

By By Ryan Satcher/staff writer
July 26, 2003
JACKSON Sometimes all it takes is one break to have your dreams come true. That break, is what former Meridian High School baseball standout Gerard McCall is counting on.
McCall, who is his second tour of duty with the Jackson Senators of the independent Central Baseball League, is waiting for his chance to shine.
For now, McCall is handling most of the catching duties for the Senators while waiting for the chance to join a team in organized baseball.
McCall had a strong season for the Senators in 2002, hitting three homers in one playoff game for the Jackson team. His contract was purchased by the Chicago Cubs prior to this season.
The Giants kept the 23-year-old as a fill-in if someone on one of the organizations Class AA or upper level A teams went down to injury. McCall's chance to didn't come, and after the Giants loaded up on young catchers in the draft, the former MHS star was released.
After being released by the Giants, McCall called the Senators and rejoined the team.
McCall started his career out of high school and spent two seasons, plus a third spring training in the Chicago White Sox organization. After the stint with the White Sox, he went to Montgomery (Ala.) in the independent All-American Association. He joined the Senators after leaving Montgomery.
The personable McCall says the end of his career is nowhere in sight.
For now, McCall is continuing to improve his game and coming into this past week was batting .320 with seven RBIs in Jackson.
