Book Lovers enjoy honey program

Members of the Book Lovers Study Club were treated to a special Valentine’s Day celebration at Doe’s Eat Place Feb. 14. Patricia Cox and Nina McNatt, co-hostesses, provided the refreshments, which included soup and delicious chocolate cake.

Jack Swaim, of Crickhollow Bee Farm, presented the program on “Restoration of the Honey Bee.” Jack discussed many important facts of honeybees:

  •  Honeybees have been producing honey in the same way for 150 million years, and they are the
    only insect that produces food eaten by man.
  • Honey is incredibly healthy and includes enzymes, vitamins and minerals.
  • Honey is the only food that contains “pinocembrin,” an antioxidant associated with improved
    brain functioning.
  • Honey’s ability to attract and retain moisture means that it has long been used as a beauty
    treatment.

Members were given an opportunity to taste the Crickhollow Bee Farm honey with Doe’s tasty biscuits.

For the institute, Martha Sibley spoke on the nutritional value of honey.

To acknowledge February as Heart Health Month, members wore the color red to the meeting.

Debbie Beason reported a tree will be purchased and planted in observation of Alabama Arbor Day on
Feb. 28.

A report was given on the Martin Luther King Day of Service at the Russellville Public Library. This project was one of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Seven Grand Initiatives. Some members organized, made copies of material and labeled activity bins for the library’s children’s room.

Details on the club’s spring barbecue dinner fundraiser were discussed. The fundraiser will be held at The Country Cottage March 14. The dinner will include barbecue, baked beans, slaw, roll and dessert. The ticket cost is $8, and tickets may be purchased from any Book Lovers Club members.

The education chairwoman announced the Alabama North District $500 scholarship deadline has been extended until March 15. This scholarship is awarded annually to a senior girl who resides in the North District Region. Applications may be picked up from the Russellville City Schools counselor.
