Red Bay High School recently acquired roll-down doors, joining the list of schools and businesses that use them instead of the more expensive passage doors. The school had two of these doors installed through the approval of a $4,200 grant by the Franklin County Community Development Commission.

The two doors are located at the entrance to the senior high and junior high hallways. Franklin County Board of Education Chairman Mike Shewbart expressed his appreciation for the funding and installation of the doors.

“It is much needed,” said Shewbart. “Community Spirit Bank contributed to the construction and also added a structure to teach financial classes. The improvements would not have been possible without the grant and the contribution from the bank.”

Roll-down doors are doors that are rolled above the hallway when entrance is permitted and rolled down when it is not. Besides helping with security during lockdowns and at night, the doors are also used to help lower the cost of heating and cooling, allow people to get to the gym or stadium during after-hour events without having to walk completely around the school and make the parking area near the stadium accessible when there is an event in the cafeteria.

FCCDC board member Brad Bolton commended the benefits the school will receive through the doors and said that the “safety of students and property is always something that we work to assist upon.”
