The Franklin County Sheriff’s Department is investigating what Sheriff Shannon Oliver said he believes was a “freak accident” that resulted in the death of a 2-year-old boy Saturday.

Oliver said the boy’s mother and father were stopped on County Road 36 in Rockwood when the incident occurred, about 5 p.m.

“They were exchanging the child from one vehicle to the other, and when the mother left, she ran over the child,” Oliver said.

An ambulance transported the 2-year-old to Russellville Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

As a matter of course, Oliver’s office is investigating the incident, but nothing suspicious is expected, Oliver said.
