Independence Day is approaching and with it one of the most popular community events of the year.
Jam on Sloss Lake is set for July 4 with its usual full slate of musical entertainment, but two special community activities will help lead up to the Jam this year.

“Back by popular demand” is a fishing rodeo, which Parks and Rec Director Chad Sears said is a well-liked event that used to be held at City Lake Park. Designed for children 14 and younger, the rodeo will take place at Sloss Lake July 2 at 5 p.m., with sign-ups June 29 and June 30 at the Russellville Parks and Recreation Department.

“It’s a chance for the kids who have never gone fishing before to get out and go fishing,” Sears said.

Sears said prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish in each age division. No fee is required to sign up, but children must sign up and must be accompanied by a parent. For this age group, fishing licenses are not required by the state.

Movie in the Park is scheduled for July 3 in the Lee Complex of John Blackwell Park. The G-rated movie will begin at dusk, but the fun starts at 6 p.m. with inflatables for the children.

“People like to just get out and do something different,” said Sears. “It’s a chance to build family and give the community a chance to come together and have a good time.”

Sears said moviegoers are invited to bring their blankets and lawn chairs.

Saturday, July 4 activities ramp up at 7 a.m. with the annual car show, which will run until 2 p.m. Musical entertainment begins at 8 a.m., with the following performers:

8-9 a.m. – Jacob Green

9:10-10:10 a.m. – Buford Parker

10:20-11:45 – The Cadillacs

noon to 3 p.m. – Entourage (local youth talent)

3-3:50 p.m. – Still Here

4-5 p.m. – Purpose

5:05-6 p.m. – Dixie Mafia

6:10-7:05 – Southbound

7:15-8:30 p.m. – Kerry Gilbert Band

8:40-9:40 p.m. – Rewind

Russellville’s massive fireworks show will wind up the day.

The event is a joint effort among the city of Russellville and the local utilities departments.

“It takes everybody,” said Councilman Gary Cummings, who helps spearhead Jam on Sloss Lake each year. “It’s just a good event … It’s a good thing for our town.”
