JACKSON Meridian Community College is the winner of the annual David Halbrook Award for having the top student-athlete graduation rate among all of Mississippi's 15 public community and junior colleges.
For the 2002-2003 school year, MCC graduated 94 percent of its sophomore student-athletes, which led all community colleges. This is the first time in the 14-year history of the award that MCC has been so honored.
MCC President Scott Elliott was on hand to receive the award at a ceremony Monday, held in conjunction with the Mississippi Association of Colleges' annual conference at Belhaven College.
Elliott said that MCC coaches regularly stay in touch with faculty to make certain student-athletes are progressing in class. Moreover, some MCC coaches conduct study halls for team members after practice.
