Judge Little and Scott Morgan held off the challenge of 11 other teams to win the annual Ed Lewis Memorial Day Tournament at Northwood Country Club by four strokes Monday afternoon. They turned in a 3-over-par 74 in the final round, but their 197 total was the only score under 200 for the tournament. Monday was a day where the proud Northwood course got its revenge after taking a beating in the first two rounds, which were played with a four-ball format on Saturday and a best-ball format on Sunday. Only six of the 71 teams turned in a score of par or better in the final round which was played under alternate shot format. None of those came in the championship flight where a true alternate shot format was used. Three were in the first flight and three were in the second flight where two shots off each tee were allowed. For the tournament, 29 teams finished at par (213) or better.

Seattle second baseman Joey Cora singled in the third inning of the Mariners' 5-0 victory over Texas, setting an AL record for switch hitters by extending his hitting streak to 23 consecutive games. He broke the old record set by Eddie Murray of Baltimore in 1984, and matched by the Orioles' Roberto Alomar in 96. Pete Rose set the major league record of 44 in 1978.
Randy Johnson is, once again, baseball's most intimidating pitcher. Johnson, making his 11th start since back surgery last september, allowed four hits and set the big league high for strikeouts in a game this season by striking out 15 in eight innings Wednesday night, leading the Seattle Mariners over the Texas Rangers 5-0. 15 topped the 13 by Toronto's Roger Clemens against Minnesota on May 10. It was the most strikeouts for Johnson since he fanned 15 Oakland Athletics on Sept. 23, 1995. Johnson struck out 15 or more for the 10th time in his career and struck out 10 or more for the 73rd time.

West Lauderdale broke open a close game in the last two innings Thursday, and freshman Jamie Brown worked his way out of two bases-loaded jams as the Knights defeated Ripley 8-1 to claim the Class 3A State Championship. The victory gave West Lauderdale (33-5) and head coach Jerry Boatner its fourth overall state title and third in the last four years.

J.T. Williamson
With the prep golf season over, J.T. Williamson is keeping sharp being a much sought after golfing partner for many of the Meridian area golf tournaments.
Williamson just competed the three-day Ed Lewis Memorial Day Golf Tournament. He partner Eddie Brown finished ninth in the championship flight at Northwood Country Club. Before that, Williamson played in the Briarwood Member/Guest Tournament on May 18-19.
Williamson is coming off a prep season which saw him help Lamar School to the Academy AAA Golf State Championship which was played at Briarwood.
So what's J.T. favorite course? "It's Canebreak. That's where I won the overall state title last year," he said. "It's my favorite of all."
But it was at Deerfield where Williamson learned a valuable lesson.
