Basketball fans in and around the area have been blessed for the past six seasons to watch Mississippi's all-time career scoring leader on the high school ranks. Now, those same fans should be able to watch Monique Horner play at least two more seasons. Horner, who recently carried Southeast Lauderdale to the Class 3A state championship, signed Monday morning to play at Meridian Community College.
Last spring, the Newton County fast-pitch softball team fought its way into the playoffs virtue of a tiebreaker and went on to win the Class 3A/2A/1A state championship. This season, the Lady Cougars didn't want to have to sweat out a postseason berth quite as long. And with a win at Clarkdale Monday night, they won't have to. Visiting Newton County overcame an early deficit with seven unanswered runs and beat Clarkdale 7-3 Monday night in a key Division 5 showdown that all but wraps up the division title. The Lady Cougars are now 24-2 overall and 10-0 in division play, while Clarkdale is 25-7 and 10-2.

DECATUR With the Region 23 Tournament fast approaching, Jamie Clark and his East Central Warriors are looking for a strong finish to the 1997 season. The Warriors took another step toward a regional berth Wednesday afternoon with a sweep of visiting Southwest Mississippi CC 6-4 and 5-1. The wins improved ECCC's record to 31-8 overall, matching the school record for wins in a season.
SCOOBA If Wednesday's action is any indication, it's going to be a tough weekend for the East Mississippi Community College baseball team. In the first of three doubleheaders in four days against the top three teams in the North Division, the Lions allowed five home runs in dropping a pair of games to second-place Northwest Community College, 5-3 and 5-2 at Poole Field on Wednesday.

COLLINSVILLE For most people, the number 13 is considered unlucky. But as far as West Lauderdale's Jeremy Jackson is concerned, he'll never be superstitious as long as 13 comes as it did in the Knights' 7-1 victory over Newton Thursday night. That's because Jackson fanned 13 Tiger hitters, marking the second game the sophomore left-hander has run up 13 strikeouts. Jackson stuck out 13 Newton County Cougars last Friday night in a win that put West in sole possession of first place in the Division 5-3A race.

Kent Daniel
The opening day of youth baseball is special indeed for Kent Daniel. Daniel is the Director of the North Meridian Optimist Club's Major League (11-and 12-year-olds).
One way to do that is to effectively manage teams and the people who run them.
That means choosing coaches who work with kids, not those who are out for personal glory.
