SCOOBA Bonnie Yvonne Parr of Meridian received a first place and an honorable mention in the ceramics category of the 14th Annual Mississippi and Junior College Competitive Art Exhibition.
Parr is a student at East Mississippi Community College. The event took place March 4 at Northeast Community College.
Lyndall Wood of Scooba and Katie Zalme of DeKalb both of whom also are EMCC students received honorable mention awards in the computer art category.
The students were among five EMCC art students who entered the competition this year. This is the first year for EMCC to participate in the competition.
Also attending the competition from EMCC: art instructor Denise Dengler and students Tori Carroll of DeKalb, Freddie Nicole Speed of Meridian, Crystal Hogan of Starkville, Jennifer Lewis of McComb and John Glass of Quitman.
Tony Dunn of Meridian has been named and All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy.
The USAA has established the All-American Scholar Award Program to offer recognition to superior students who excel in the academic disciplines.
All-American Scholars must earn at least a 3.3 grade point average. Only scholars selected by a school instructor, counselor or other qualified sponsor are accepted.
The scholars are also eligible for other awards given by USAA.
Dunn, who attends Meridian High School, will appear in the All-American Scholar Yearbook which is published nationally. He is the son of Lolita Dunn of Meridian. His grandparents are Ronald Tanner of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Georgia Henderson of Waynesboro.
The following students at Kate Griffin Junior High School will have poems published in a national publication, the 2002 edition of "Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans":
Shoney Hunt, Rita Brookshire, Shawn Hersey, Josiah Crowell, Jacolby Davis, Chris Harris, Turbois Jennings, Aquila Kersh, Lafatima Starkey, Franchesca Stevens, Shantari Lewis, Deidra Adams, Brittany Kennedy, Donsha Mosley, Jonathan Pruitt, Seka White and Christopher Spencer.
English teacher Liz Michael said students submit work to various local, state and national publications throughout the year. She said many students are beginning to see themselves as writers.
