Players of the week

Here are The Meridian Star's players of the week in football and softball for high school teams in Lauderdale County.
Football
Meridian High: Junior lineman Brennan Vaughn has really stepped up into a leadership role for the Wildcats. "He showed a lot of toughness and played the whole game on both sides of the ball," said head coach Bill Sartin following Friday's loss 14-3 loss to Wayne County.
Lamar: Senior wide receiver Zach Moore played a hard fought game Friday night for the Raiders in their 31-12 loss to Oak Hill. "He played both sides of the ball and got some catches," said head coach Mac Barnes.
West Lauderdale: Junior running back Carlessio Blanks gained over 150 yards rushing in the Knights' 27-9 loss to Newton County. "He gets a lot of credit for his rushing, but he also plays a great linebacker," said head coach Stan McCain.
Northeast Lauderdale: The Trojans do not have a player of the week following a 9-8 loss to West Jones. "We played horrible Friday night," said head coach Andy Stevens. "Nobody played well enough to get it."
Southeast: Junior wide receiver Roderick Baskin caught two touchdown passes for the Tigers Friday night as they defeated the Heidelberg High School Oilers 20-17 in overtime. "I was glad to see him have such a good game on offense," said head coach Dwane Taylor.
Clarkdale: Running back Mitchell Matthews rushed for two touchdowns for the Bulldogs including a 65 yarder and a 45 yarder. Clarkdale dropped a 28-14 decision to McLaurin.
Softball
Meridian High: Junior third baseman Ashley Brown had a big week for the Lady Wildcats. "She hit two big doubles against Brandon," said head coach Thad George.
West Lauderdale: Senior short stop Amber Joiner continues to be the Lady Knights strongest player on defense among other things. "She's had a good offensive week really improving her batting average," said head coach Jerry Boatner.
Northeast Lauderdale: Sophomore first baseman Amber Gray had a big week for the Lady Trojans. "She hit a couple of triples and drove in a lot of runs," said head coach Chris Harper.
Southeast: Eighth grade third baseman Heather Ward continues to be the Lady Tigers leading hitter going 10-17 last week. "She's our leading hitter as well as playing a solid third base," said head coach Ryan Miller.
Clarkdale: Senior first baseman Ashley Satcher has really contributed this week for the Lady Bulldogs. "She's really starting to hit the ball coming off a big knee injury," said head coach Rick Roberson.
