This weekend, downtown Meridian will showcase the 18th Annual Anderson Cup Road Race. The 5K race will begin Saturday at 8 a.m.
The event features a 5K Run, 2-Mile Walk and a 1-Mile Fun Run. On-site registration will be from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m., in the Hospital Courtyard.
This year race organizer Joel Johnson, who is also head of the Anderson Fitness Center, said the 5K course is a little different from last year's first-time downtown format.
Minor modifications aside, Johnson feels as if the racing community will really enjoy the revamped Anderson course.
Johnson said as of Wednesday afternoon, there were approximately 131 contestants already registered.
Ideally, Johnson said the goal for this year is that day-of registration will push the total number of contestants to 250.
All late entries will have a fee of $18 for the 5K and 2-Mile Walk. The Late registration fee for the Fun Run is $14.
Locker rooms are provided through Anderson's Fitness Center.
Racers who registered early can pick up their packets at the fitness center from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., today and Friday.
Last year's Anderson winner's were Mike Thrailkill and Amy Davis. Thrailkill recorded a time of 16:50, while Davis finished at 20:27.
The 1-Mile Fun Run begins at 8:45 a.m. For more information, contact Joel Johnson at 553-6622.
