In recognition of travel and tourism's tremendous economic, social and cultural impact, the Lauderdale County Tourism Bureau and the state of Mississippi will observe National Tourism Week May 5-11.
A brief ceremony will be held at the Mississippi Welcome Center in Toomsuba at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
Local officials will proclaim "Tourism Week" for Meridian and Lauderdale County. Visitors at the Welcome Center will be treated to a Southern style breakfast of biscuits and grits and country music.
Meridian's own favorite son, "Jimmie Rodgers," portrayed by Britt Gully, will be there to entertain. Local hotels will provide refreshments throughout the day for visiting travelers.
On Monday, local tourism officials will visit the Vicksburg Welcome Center, were they will display information on Meridian and Lauderdale County and be on hand to promote East Central Mississippi.
