St. Paul's Episcopal Church will present the next concert in their Chamber Series Thursday at 12:05 p.m. in the church Parish Hall.
Lyricas is a chamber duo formed in 1998 by Mississippi College professors, Angel Willoughby and James Sclater. Their repertoire includes a variety of literature from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as compositions by clarinetist, James Sclater. They have recently released a CD entitled "Conversations" which includes works by Weber, Horovitz, Mozart, Schubert and Sclater.
Lyricas has given recitals in venues in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. In the summer of 2001, the duo performed at St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London, England, and at the Clarinetfest 2001 in New Orleans.
Dr. Angela Willoughby, a native of Rayville, La., is assistant professor of piano at Mississippi College in Clinton. Her doctoral studies were completed at Louisiana State University, studying with Milton Hallman and Jack Guerry. She serves as vice-president for competitions for the Mississippi Music Teachers Association and as director of music at Fondren Presbyterian Church in Jackson.
Dr. James Sclater has been a faculty member at Mississippi College since 1970 and played in the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra for 29 years. A native of Mobile, Ala., he earned the D.M.A. in composition from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970. A winner of the 1974 Ostwald Prize for Band Music, he has received various awards and commissions for his compositions from organizations such as the Mississippi Music Teachers Association, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, ASCAP and the Mississippi Institute for Arts and Letters.
A sample of their repertoire is Grand Duo Concertant by Carl Maria von Weber, Time Pieces by Robert Muczynski, Sonata by Paul Kindemith, Five Bagatelles by Gerald Finzi, Six Folksong Studies by James Sclater, Schubertliederfantasie by James Sclater and Sonatina by Joseph Horovitz.
Lyricas will present a program that will include Romanian Whirling Dance by James Sclater, Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, op. 120, #1 in f minor by Johannes Brahms, Sonatina by Joseph Horovitz and Pocket-Size Sonata by Alec Templeton.
The public is invited to attend and are encouraged to bring a bag lunch with them to the concert. Admission is free.
