Jeff Davis' trip to bench was not planned route

By Staff
From Staff Reports
Dec. 13, 2001
When Jeff Davis was playing high school basketball alongside current Southeast Lauderdale High School boys coach Ryan Miller and watching his uncle Donald Shirley coach the Lady Tigers of Southeast, he never thought he was going to be a coach.
Davis, currently in his third season as the head coach for the Lady Bulldogs of Clarkdale High School, got his degree in secondary education, planning to be a history teacher.
After taking a teaching job at Clarkdale he began to help former CHS boys head coach Ronnie Roberts as an assistant. Then when the girls post came open, he decided to work the sidelines for a living.
The Lady Bulldogs, who are currently 6-9 on the season, hit the road to take on Newton High School on Friday night.

Division 5-3A the toughest?
Any time there is a girls basketball game in Division 5-3A these days, expect a war.
Southeast Lauderdale is the defending Class 3A State Champion. The Lady Tigers ran their record to 11-3 following Tuesday night's come-from-behind 68-59 win over Newton County.
All three of Coach Joe Miller's team's losses have come against division opponents.
Newton County head coach Natalie Vance agrees.

Tupelo gave Lady Cats rough time
Last Friday night, the Meridian Lady Wildcats hooked up with Tupelo for the first time since last March's 5A State Girls Championship Game at the Big House in Jackson.
It was not a pleasant night for coach Donald Shirley's team. Tupelo, off to a 12-0 start, ripped Meridian 72-42. But Shirley says the game was closer than the score indicates.

AAA quarterbacks get job done
Both of the Offensive MVPs for the MPSA All-Star game last weekend were quite familiar with each other and Mississippi College's Robinson-Hale Stadium field. That's because they started against each other for the Academy AAA final.
Micah Schilling led Silliman Institute to the AAA title by beating the Chad McMahan-led North Delta School 14-12 the week before at MC. On Friday, Schilling was the starting quarterback for the South All-Stars. McMahan was the starter for the North.
This time, it was McMahan who left a winner, directing the North to the 28-14 win. McMahan rushed for 95 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw a 39-yard TD pass to Starkville's Parker Mullins.
Schilling was one tired all-star following his game effort. He ran the ball 20 times for 90 yards and a touchdown. He was also 12-of-30 passing for 95 yards.
