The Meridian Dixie Majors and Pre-Majors are both headed to the Dixie Youth World Series next weekend.
The Meridian Majors defeated Benton 4-1 Thursday night in Taylorsville to win the state championship, while the Meridian Pre-Majors defeated Laurel-Jones County twice Thursday in Laurel to claim their state championship.
The Majors got another outstanding pitching performance from Todd Doolittle, who went seven innings, allowing one hit and striking out 14 batters. He also overcame seven walks.
At the plate, Phillip Garrett drove in a run with a couple of singles and a double, while Josh Snider added a two-run double and Brad McKey had a run-scoring double. Jonathan Stevens also singled and doubled.
The Pre-Majors, who were beaten by Laurel-Jones County Tuesday night, needed to beat the host team twice to win the state title. Meridian won the first game 5-3 and took the decisive Game 2 7-3 and will be heading to South Carolina to represent the state of Mississippi in the Dixie Youth Pre-Majors World Series.
The Majors will find out Monday where they'll be headed.
