Candidates have fun for a serious cause

Meridian mayoral and city council candidates were working toward a common cause Monday helping to restock the local blood supply.
In anticipation of a need for blood during the Memorial Day weekend, United Blood Services of Mississippi held a blood drive with a bonus.
Usually donors receive a T-shirt and get their car washed free of charge by volunteers during blood drives, according to Jane Smith, community relations representative for United Blood Services of Mississippi.
But for Monday's drive she invited Meridian's mayoral and city council candidates to do the dirty work.
Smith said all the candidates were invited to participate and that all of them said they would help, either by washing vehicles or donating blood.
Local Jaycees also helped the cause by cooking hamburgers for blood donors at United Blood Services' headquarters on 25th Avenue.
