RED BAY – RED BAY-The Red Bay varsity girls basketball team was able to overcome a sloppy first quarter and pull away from Phil Campbell in a 51-28 win Thursday night at Red Bay.
The Tigers led 14-7 in the first quarter, but missed several shots underneath the basket – something that did not please Red Bay coach Donnie Roberts.
"We missed too many shots under the goal," said Roberts. "And we missed too many free throws."
In the second quarter, however, the Lady Tigers found their shooting touch, outscoring Phil Campbell 24-8, -most coming from Morgan Duncan, who scored 13 in the quarter.
The Red Bay starters played the first half of the third quarter, then sat out the rest of the game, allowing the reserves to get some playing time.
"I'd rather had them play," said Roberts of his starting five. "We haven't played any in the week at all, but we were able to get the other girls some work in too."
The third quarter saw Red Bay outscore the Lady Bobcats 11-8, while Phil Campbell held the scoring advantage in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Tigers 5-2 as both teams emptied the bench.
Duncan led the way for Red Bay with 16 points, while Whitney Sharp scored 10. Kirsten Sharp added eight, Hannah Sharp added seven, and Morgan McKinney added five. Emily Barksdale and Caitlyn Childers scored two apiece, while Britan Bolding closed out the scoring with one point.
Ciara Harville scored 13 to lead Phil Campbell. Jessica Taylor finished with eight points, Lindsey Jackson chipped in four, and Whitley Yocom rounded out the scoring with three for the Lady Bobcats.
