Davis looking to make history

By Staff
Rep. Artur Davis announced Friday that he will seek the Democratic Party nomination for governor.
Davis, well respected congressman who represents the state's seventh congressional district which runs from the high rises of downtown Birmingham, home of some of the state's largest businesses, to some of Alabama's poorest communities in the Black Belt, is a Harvard law school graduate and Montgomery attorney.
The election bid by the 41-year-old Davis represents the most serious bid ever by an African-American for the state's highest office.
Davis joins Republican Tim James of Greenville as the only two formally declared candidates for governor to succeed Gov. Bob Riley who by law cannot seek a third term.
Many have said that Alabama is not ready to elect a black governor. Many said the same about America and the White House.
