A Phil Campbell man pled guilty to first-degree sexual abuse for charges that date back to the 1990s.
Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said Eddie Dean Calhoun, 45, of 1209 Highway 82 in Phil Campbell, pled guilty to the charges Wednesday instead of going to trial.
"Mr. Calhoun decided to enter into a 'best interest' plea, which means he agreed we had enough evidence to convict him in trial," Rushing said.
Calhoun will serve 15 years in prison and be required to register as a sex offender.
Rushing said the charges stem from an incident that occurred in the 1990s at his home. The victim was visiting his home when the sexual act occurred. The victim was under the age of 12 at the time of the incident, but reported it as an adult.
"There is no statute of limitations in molestation cases such as this in Alabama," Rushing said.
Calhoun will serve all 15 years in prison since probation, community corrections or a split sentence cannot be imposed due to the nature of the crime.
"Our office and the victim are please with the outcome of this case," Rushing said.
