Voter registration concludes today

Today is the last day to register to vote if you want to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
Lori Young, chairperson for the Franklin County Board of Registrars, said the office has registered over 219 additional voters this year than in 2004, when the last [residential election was held.
"We have registered 1,543 voters since January, and we registered 1,324 for the same period in 2004," Young said.
Women seem to be registering more this year. Young said 657 of those registered this year are women, and 63 are Hispanic. But the fact that stands out the most is the office seems to be getting more senior citizens registering to vote for the first time.
"We had an older lady in her seventies, and she said she had never voted before," Young said.
Young said the office has been steady all year with people registering.
"The flow this week isn't very unusual," she said. "We've had a busy year with the city elections and the primary in June."
Young said potential voters can register by coming by her office, located downstairs in the courthouse. The form asks for a Alabama driver's license number or the last four digits of the person's social security number. There is no waiting period on registering to vote.
"You don't have to wait a period of time to register in Franklin County if you've recently moved here," she said. "You can register as soon as you move."
