BEAR CREEK – When a team scores six touchdowns in a game, chances are good a victory will follow.
That was not the case for Vina Friday as the Red Devils scored often but could not match the offensive power of Phillips in an 82-44 loss.
Phillips opened the scoring but Vina (1-5, 1-4) answered quickly when Brent Townsend ran the ball 60 yards for a touchdown on Vina's second play of the game. Phillips (4-2, 3-2) added two more touchdowns in the opening quarter.
Townsend found Cass White for a 33-yard touchdown pass with 10:15 to play in the half and Morgan McCarley pulled in the pass on the two-point conversion. Phillips closed out the first half with three more touchdown drives.
The Black Bears increased their lead with a touchdown four minutes into the third quarter.
Townsend answered minutes later with a 2-yard scoring run, but Phillips added another score later in the quarter.
Both teams scored three touchdowns each in the final quarter.
Townsend hit McCarley for a 29-yard touchdown pass. A couple of minutes later White returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown.
Vina's final score was a 9-yard pass from Townsend to McCarley and White caught the two-point pass.
Vina rolled up 357 yards of total offense.
Townsend completed 8-of-25 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns while throwing only one interception. He also led the rushing attack with 28 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Channing Haithcock had 5 rushes for 43 yards.
McCarley caught nine passes for 85 yards and two scores while White had seven receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Vina is on the road again next Friday to play Waterloo.
