VINA – The Vina chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) distributed more than 200 cans of food to five local families last week after holding a school-wide canned food drive in April.
NHS Sponsor Jennifer Hamilton said each student was encouraged to bring a can with them to school April 17 through 25.
"We had a competition to see what grade collected the most cans," she said. "Kindergarten alone collected over 100 cans."
The kindergarten class was rewarded for their efforts with a party.
The club was able to identify local families in need by contacting the school nurse. The food was distributed to those families.
"NHS is a service-oriented club dedicated to service learning," Hamilton said. "The canned food drive was the club's main project this year, but I plan to incorporate many more community service projects into next year's activities."
Vina's NHS students also volunteer with other organizations to accumulate community service hours.
"Each member has to complete a specific number of community service hours and projects because it is a service learning organization," she said.
Hamilton said she was amazed by the outcome of the project, and plans to hold another one next year.
