Last week I came to the realization that I am an addict. This conclusion came to me when I found myself drawn to something that I should not want.
That something was a pair of shoes. I realized that I am addicted to buying shoes. According to the dictionary, an addiction is something that you feel the need or compulsion to do, even though it's bad for you.
While buying excessive pairs of shoes will not hurt me, it will hurt my checkbook balance.
In addition to my addiction for shoes, I am also a boarder-line jewelry addict. I am only a boarder-line jewelry addict because I can control it – sometimes.
No matter where I shop, if they have shoe department, I always find myself lost there. I could literally spend hours in the shoe department, especially if it's a really big store with a variety of shoes in stock.
During a recent shopping trip I found myself drooling over a pair of white sandals with black soles.
I almost bought them. The only thing that stopped them from becoming apart of my wardrobe was the fact that it's unfashionable to wear white before Easter.
I remember throwing down the shoes and walking away very quickly.
In order to combat these addictions, I have decided that I am going to charter a support group for women like me who cannot stay out of the shoe aisle.
My group should be called Shoe Shoppers Anonymous.
I have found a few women who share my addiction and would enjoy talking about their love for shoes in order to regain control of their feet. We are making plans to meet to discuss our problem.
Some have suggested that we meet at the mall to face our problems head on. Others prefer a neutral zone that is shoe free.
I would be okay with all of us floating around my pool talking about our love for shoes until we can gain enough self-control to go on a shopping trip together. There is strength in numbers.
If we all know we have a weakness for shoes, then we can lean on each other.
Skeptics say that we'll all just end up in the shoe department together searching for a bargain on a new pair.
Admiting you have a problem is the first step to recovery.
