The students at West Elementary School got a lesson in good sportsmanship Monday as they participated in contest to raise money for Relay for Life.
Parental Involvement Counselor Michelle Hester said that the students brought money from home to fill up coin jars. One jar was labeled Alabama and the other labeled Auburn.
Principal Ramona Robinson was for Auburn while Assistant Principal Dr. Chris James was for Alabama.
"The contest was that the winner would throw a pie at the loser," Hester said.
She added that while the competition was going on, the children were learning about good sportsmanship in Character Education.
"We talked to them about how important good sportsmanship is, and that even though we are competing the money raised goes for the same cause, the Relay for Life," Hester said.
After the competition was over, Auburn was defeated by approximately $300. Auburn fans raised $551.62 and Alabama fans raised $861.44, with a grand total of $1413.06 to go toward this year's Relay for Life.
Hester said even though James was supposed to give Robinson a pie in the face, he agreed to take a few pies of his own since the students raised such a large amount of money, and displayed good sportsmanship of his own.
"It's all the students have been talking about," Hester said. "They have been so excited."
The time for pie came on Monday afternoon. Both James and Robinson were served up a face full of pie as the students cheered them on. However, for the grand finale, James gave Robinson her final piece of pie – a chocolate frozen pie.
"That pie is freezing," Robinson said after the event. "We are very proud of our students for their efforts."
