Plans are key to keeping us safe

By Staff
The Franklin County Emergency Management Agency is working with local agencies to make sure the county has an up-to-date, useful mitigation plan in place that would help the county in the event of a natural disaster.
Who knows when a powerful tornado could rip through just like it did in neighboring Lawrence County just a few weeks ago? Or how could we be prepared for falling trees and power lines like we have seen in the past during ice storms and hurricanes?
Mitigation plans help prepare us for disaster even when we don't realize it. The government requires each county to have one. If not, there could be no funding available after a storm passes.
The local EMA works hard in getting funding that protects us all before and after a storm. The county has six new shelters, several sirens and other protective measures because of their work.
