Most of Monday night's Red Bay council meeting was devoted to police department issues. Police training concerns were discussed in great detail last summer, and the council voted to allow the department to schedule training as long as the department stays within its budget, and that they take advantage of free training whenever possible.
The department has lived up to their end of the deal. This issue should have been finished.
Instead, it rears its head again.
It takes training to have good officers on the streets. This training could mean the difference between life and death. It's that important.
We don't understand why the council insists on harping on the same issues meeting after meeting, taking action on subjects only to revisit them later and change their stance. Police officers are required to have a minimum of 12 hours of training by the State of Alabama. This is non-negotiable. Why fight it? We encourage the council members to put these issues with police training behind them and give the people of Red Bay what they deserve – well-trained police protection.
