Mr. McMullan and Thelma shared a love of politics, poetry, community service, history, nature, current events, education, travel, genealogy and history. They were active in Democratic politics, serving as delegates to the 1964 Democratic Convention. He delighted in serving on Governor Paul Johnson Jr.'s Park Board. He was a Colonel to Governors Johnson, Waller, Finch, and Winter.
He served on the Newton School Board and sponsored an annual scholarship to a Newton High School graduate. McMullan and Thelma strongly supported the McMullan Library, Ole Miss, East Central Community College, Mary Baldwin College, and the Newton Presbyterian Church. He liked to quote his mother who said, "the only thing you can take with you is what you give away."
He delighted in working in his garden and fishing in his pond. His yard was ablaze with color year round. He loved taking flowers he grew to his friends. His gift for storytelling is captured in his two books, "Lake Chronicles" and "Profiles From Lake in the Silver Age."
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his brothers, Ben, Pat, Malcolm, Dillard and John McMullan; and his sisters, Maude and Dimple.
Survivors include his sisters, Clem McMullan Brown and Jerry McMullan Brown, and his children, Sarah McMullan, Martha Ann McMullan Aasen, Jimmy McMullan, and David McMullan. His grandchildren Amanda Barber, Frank David Barber III, Melanie Barber, Annabel Barber, Paul Barber, David and Susan Aasen, and Carlette, Margaret, David, and Richard McMullan. His great-grandchildren are Caroline, Frank, Bryce, James, and William Barber and Mark, James, Trey and Walker McMullan. Other survivors include a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, out-laws and friends.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to the McMullan Library in Newton.
Pallbearers will be Pat Brown, Kent Brown, Dick McMullan, Pat McMullan Jr., Paul McMullan, Wyche McMullan, Robert McMullan, Pat McMullan III, Doug McMullan, John Baxter Burns, Melvin Tingle and Tiny Parker.
Honorary pallbearers will be present and past Newton County Bank officers, directors and employees.
Visitation will be at the funeral home today from 5-8 p.m.
ALBERTA COLE

DEKALB Services for Alberta Cole will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Lauderdale with the Rev. Terry Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Pack Cemetery in Lauderdale with E.E. McDonald Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cole, 85, of Lauderdale, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at the Reginald P. White Nursing Facility.
Survivors include her husband, Grady Cole, six daughters, Lillie B. Cole and Christine Payne and her husband, Roger, all of Lauderdale, Bertha Cooper and her husband, Edward, of Marion, Jeneiva Moore and her husband Tom, of Daleville, Rosey Nealy of Scooba, Onnie Cole of Baton Rouge, La.; two sisters, Annie Turner and Ella Ree Moore, both of Cuba; 23 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three sons and a sibling.
Visitation will be today from 2-7 p.m. at E.E. McDonald Chapel in Meridian.

WAYNESBORO Services for Lerlie Mae Taylor will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Isney Baptist Church in Silas, Ala. with the Revs. Frank Tribble and Clay Chancelor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Freeman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Taylor, 94, of Marion, died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in her home. She was a member of Isney Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Faye Jones and her husband, James, of Meridian; a brother, Bivin Sanderson and a sister-in-law, Lois Sanderson, both of Frost Bridge; a sister-in-law, Sadie West of Beat-Four; and seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Abb Taylor; and two brothers, Hugh Sanderson and Jim Sanderson.
Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
JAMES HOWARD

DEKALB Services for James Howard will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at E.E. McDonald Funeral Home with the Rev. T.C. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Kemper Bell Road in Scooba.
Mr. Howard, 87, of Scooba, died Friday, April 20, 2001, in his home.
Survivors include six daughters, Mary J. Shields and Lucy M. Pope, both of Scooba, Verda B. Scott of DeKalb, Bernice Hodges and her husband, Eddie, Almeta Short and her husband, William, and Eva M. James and her husband, Ronald, two sons, James F. Howard and his wife, Mavis, all of Chicago; Willie J. Little and his wife, Loretta, of Scooba; a sister, LoLee Shields of Bellville, Ill.; and 39 grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by two wives and two sons.
Visitation will be today from 2-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
PAT WESTBROOK

LOUISVILLE Services for Pat Westbrook will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Don Boone, Carless Evan and Dr. Jimmy Porter officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with Tilghman Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Westbrook, 65, of Louisville, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle in Columbus. She was a member of First Baptist Church and co-owner of Westbrook Funeral Home for 31 years. She was a stockholder in Gulf Holdings Company who owns Gulf National Life Insurance Company and Magnolia Guaranty Life Insurance Company. She was a former member of the American Shetland Pony Club and American Miniature Horse Registry and the Mississippi Funeral Directors Association. She was a retired licensed funeral director.
Survivors include her husband, George W. Westbrook and a daughter, Pamela W. Smith, both of Louisville; a son, Ronald B. Westbrook and a daughter-in-law, Valorie B. Westbrook, both of Little Rock; her father, Pat Long of Louisville; two sisters, Carolyn Williams of Brandon and Marilyn Huggins of Birmingham, Ala.; and three grandchildren, Rachel Gayle Smith, W. Hastings Westbrook and Robert B. Westbrook.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Gladys Odell Bunyard Long in 1990 and a son-in-law, James. M. "Buck" Smith.
Visitation will be today from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
