The Meridian High Wildcats took a 13-1 District 5-5A baseball victory over the Brandon Bulldogs Tuesday night at John Moss Field.
Meridian improved to 13-7 overall, but more importantly, the Cats upped their district record to 3-1. The Bulldogs fell to 6-8 and 1-3.
John Iverson got the win on the mound for the Wildcats and is now 5-1 on the year. Iverson allowed only five hits. Brent Leach suffered the loss and fell to 0-5.
Multiple hitters for the Wildcats were Torry Bates, who went 3-for-3, one of which was a towering home run, and Tyler Singleton, who also went 3-for-3.
Meridian will travel to Union Thursday for a 4 p.m. makeup game that was rained out last Saturday.
The Wildcats head to Starkville on Friday where they will take on Tupelo at 5 p.m. before a 7 p.m. contest with the host Yellow Jackets.
The Cats got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first when they scored seven runs on five hits. Richmond Alexander, John Stevens, Sanduan Dubose, Iverson, Kris Barnett, Ricky McMillian, and Bates, all scored.
Meridian then balloned the lead to 11-0, when McMillian, Bates, Singleton, and Andy Slayton, all crossed the plate.
The Wildcats got their last two runs in the third frame on Bates two-run homer that plated McMillian.
The Bulldogs got their lone score in the fourth inning when pinch hitter Colby Cox walked and later scored on a single by Kyle Sephton.
Meridian shut the Bulldogs down in the fifth to earn the lopsided victory, by the 10-run mercy rule.
