Rodney Wing of Meridian made history this past weekend as he won the Governor's Cup race at the new Magnolia Super Speedway dirt track in Columbus.
Wing started 11th and worked his way to the front of the 60-lap race, taking the front spot in the 37th lap. The only caution of the race came on the 40th lap. But on the restart, Wing continued to lead and pulled away from the competition.
Wing collected a $10,000 first place check for the victory.
Terrance Nowell of Phenix City, Ala., finished second, followed by Anthony Rushing in third, Derrick Durrett in fourth and Kenny Merchant in fifth place. James Dean of Chunky finished sixth, followed by Scott Slay in seventh, Jack Sullivan in eighth place, Bubba Mullens in ninth and Jason Smith in 10th place.
More than 3,000 were in attendance for the inaugural weekend of the new race track.
Queen City
Jeffery Walker took the lead midway through the Late Model feature race and never looked back as he claimed victory at the Queen City Super Speedway on Saturday night.
Lucky Keeton, who drove his new No. 22 car for the first time, led the first 14 laps with Walker right on him. Then Keeton got caught up in some lapped traffic for just a second, and Walker made his move.
Walker is driving the No. 0 car for Pierce Dickson, who has been unable to race for the past few weeks.
Chad Thrash finished third, followed by Jimbo McDuffie and Randy Walters.
Cruiser: The drivers and cars in the Cruiser Division were really put to the test in a special 30-lap race.
Ben drives the car and has his foot on the brake while Ronnie gives it the gas. The Hollomans took the lead after the 21st lap and never trailed.
Mike Kelly and Joe Ulmer of Newton County took the lead in the third lap and held it until the Hollomans went in front on the 22nd lap. Holly Thrash and Brandon Bishop finished second.
Pure Street: Jason Boleware led all the way as he captured first place in the Pure Street Division. It was the second victory in as many weeks for Boleware, as he leads the Queen City track standings. Tommy McCall came in second, followed by David Minor.
Ministock: Billy Ward was the winner in the Ministock Division for the third week in a row as he led all the way. Jason Breeland came in second, followed by Jennifer Shelton.
Modifieds: Brian Chaney won the heat race and the feature race in the Modified Division. Daniel Boyd came in second, followed by Brian Quinn.
Late Model Stocks: Marty Lyons led one lap in the Late Model Stocks Division. But then he was tagged with a caution flag after a wreck which sent him to the back of the pack. Mike Shirley took over the lead and held on for the victory. Phillip Carlisle came in second, followed by Frank Mazingo.
Causeyville
Charlie Bradberry won the Stock Heavy Division and placed third in the Stock Medium to cap the go-kart races at the Causeyville Raceway.
James Wilson won the Outlaw Division, followed by Clint McCombs and Richard Wooten. Daniel Bridgman won the Stock Lite and Zac White came in first in the Junior Stock. Alex Walton placed first in the Rookie Purple, while Tyler Smith won the Rookie Blue.
