SCOOBA The Roger Carr era at East Mississippi Community College began even before he was hired to the full-time staff.
The new EMCC football coach attended the team's spring drills for 20 days in March, familiarizing himself with new faces on the field and within his staff.
Carr said one of the things that stuck out immediately about his team was its youth.
The first-year coach will put his stamp on the team immediately. East Mississippi will rely on speed on both sides of the ball to try to out-manuever bigger, stronger teams.
Carr ought to be able to recognize talented receivers when he sees them. The former Baltimore Colt was an All-Pro in 1976 and led the NFL in receiving yards that year with 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The Lions will continue the speed-over-strength theme on defense with a new defensive alignment.
Carr said depth will again be a problem for EMCC's defense, but that the centerpieces of the 4-2-5 formation the linebackers should be able to help make up for problems up front.
We're a bit thin on the defensive line, but we moved some people around, and we've got some good inside linebackers," Carr said.
