The Lauderdale Council of Aging has opened nominations to recognize outstanding senior citizens, to be honored at an awards banquet in May during Older Americans Month.
The two people selected will receive their awards during the council's annual luncheon, set for May 1 at the Frank Cochran Center.
Nominees must be at least 60 years old, and those submitting nominations must complete an application. Mosley said a panel made up of part of the 15-member board of directors will make the final selection.
As in the past, the luncheon will be catered by members of the Mississippi Air National Guard at Key Field. The luncheon is free. Earlier in the day, a Senior Health Fair will be held at the Senior Citizens Center.
Other special events during Older Americans Month include: a golf tournament May 3 at Lakeview Golf Course; bingo at the Senior Citizens Center every Thursday at 2 p.m.; a Senior Walk-a-thon at Bonita Lakes Mall and a Ping-Pong tournament at the center May 9; a games day at the center May 11; a bowling tournament at Dixie Bowl Lanes May 15; a pool tournament at the center May 18; and a cake walk sponsored by officials at the center and Aldersgate Retirement Community.
For more information or a nomination form, call Lorine Mosley at 485-1812.
