Rain washes out local baseball and softball

By By Richard Dark/The Meridian Star
March 21, 2001
All the rain has left area high school and college baseball and softball coaches feeling blue.
Tuesday's steady rains that drenched the area marked the second straight day of teams having to reschedule and otherwise reshuffle game plans.
One area coach didn't mind sharing his disappointment in his teams' difficulty in getting through a game week with the backdrop of a nice or even a decent climate.
But thankfully, (today) it's supposed to be real nice, so maybe it'll be the start of some nice weather. Hopefully, we will be able to go awhile before getting rained out again.
The early season has not been kind, as each of the past four weeks have seen raindrops fall. McLemore said it would probably help if the start of the high school baseball season were pushed back a week or two when the spring weather patterns are somewhat less inclement, but with state championship best-of-three series that don't wind up until approximately the last week of school, there isn't many alternatives.
Meridian and the surrounding area has received nearly eight inches of precipitation in March alone.
The Wildcats will again try to squeeze in their Division 5-5A contest with the Wayne County War Eagles today.
First pitch for the Varsity tilt will be at 6 p.m.
Southeast Lauderdale's Division 5-3A game with Newton County will take place today at 4 p.m. Northeast Lauderdale and Quitman's schedule 5-4A Tuesday contest has been moved to today, but the game time had not yet been announced.
The Junior College teams have naturally been plagued by rainouts as well, but today's Meridian Community College game at East Mississippi should go on without a hitch.
