WAYNESBORO To say retired Chancery Clerk H.H. "Herky" Hardee was surprised to be named Wayne County's Distinguished Citizen of the Year is a bit of an understatement.
Hardee admitted, however, that he became suspicious after his pastor and the award's presenter, DeJuan Walley, began reading the introduction.
Hardee, a native and lifelong resident of Wayne County, served five terms as chancery clerk, retiring last year. He graduated from Clara High School and the University of Southern Mississippi.
He taught school for one year, then worked in a trucking business and for the Mississippi Department of Health for eight years before deciding to run for office.
He was pleased to receive the Distinguished Citizen Award.
He may be retired, but he stays busy. Hardee is on the Wayne County Economic Development Agency board, and he does some land development.
Hardee and his wife, Dinah, have two children, Scott and Deeanna.
