They say the world of arts in Meridian would be like a painting without a canvas were it not for Emma McCain.
Ford's comments were echoed by many patrons of the arts, such as Connie Royal, executive director of the Meridian Arts Council.
Born in Vicksburg, McCain is a graduate of the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. Afterward, her patriotism called her to serve in the American Red Cross during World War II. When the war was over, she found herself in New York serving as president of the Savings Bank Women a position she held until 1972 when she decided on Meridian as a home.
Since then, Ford said the two have shared many fond memories involving the arts, including attending dozens of Broadway plays and performances of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and Metropolitan Opera in New York, and many events at Carnegie Hall. Throughout that time, Ford said McCain received numerous awards for her own talent and patronage of the arts.
The most recent acknowledgement of her dedication to the arts includes Friday's naming of the theater at Meridian Community College the "Emma McCain Theater" during a ceremony titled, "Serenade to a Great Lady."
The recognition was authorized by a unanimous decision of the MCC Board of Trustees, said Ralph Young Jr., chairman and 16-year-member of the board.
McCain has made dozens of financial contributions to the college, including two $100,000-plus gifts to the foundation. She established the cultural arts endowment. The foundation also previously recognized her as "Philanthropist of the Year."
