A Meridian man arrested on felony DUI charges attempted to kill himself Saturday in the Lauderdale County jail, according to Maj. Ward Calhoun of the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department.
Louis A. Cabral, 39, of 9180 Hillcrest Drive, was taken to a local hospital for treatment and then transported to University Medical Center in Jackson, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday night.
Calhoun said the incident is under investigation. He said Cabral apparently attempted to hang himself with a bed sheet in his jail cell. Calhoun said the incident happened around noon, but he did not know how Cabral's suicide attempt was discovered. Cabral's cell was in the jail's C Building, a general population area for prisoners.
Cabral was booked into jail at 3:50 a.m. Saturday. He was stopped by deputies in the area of Springhill Loop, in the southern part of the county, at about 3 a.m.
In addition to his felony DUI charge, which carried a $5,000 bond, he was charged with driving on a suspended license. After his arrest, a hold was placed on Cabral by the Mississippi Department of Corrections, but Calhoun said he did not know why.
