In spite of concerns about the possibility of more state funding cuts, Meridian Community College continues to make strides to grow in size and enrollment.
The fall semester starts Aug. 18, and MCC President Scott Elliott hopes this will be another record year for enrollment.
MCC and Mississippi State University-Meridian Campus made headlines this week when they announced a new "two-plus-two" program that will allow students to earn bachelor's degrees in communications.
Elliott, an editorial board guest of The Meridian Star last week, said the two schools are working to develop more degree programs together.
He said MCC will offer a cosmetology program along with other new classes this semester. And, the school's new fine arts wing is scheduled to open this fall.
Elliott also said The MCC Foundation's Tuition Guarantee Program, open to every new graduate of a public or private high school in Lauderdale County, continues to grow.
Tuition costs are waived for students in the program as long as they maintain a C average.
Elliott also discussed his vision for MCC's role in the Riley Education and Performing Arts Center, under construction; and his philosophy on the role of community colleges as part of their communities. The complete interview with Elliott will be published in the Monday edition of The Meridian Star.
