THS GIRLS HOLD OFF RBHS FOR WIN

The Tharptown Wildcats held off a pesky Red Bay Tiger team to get their first win on the season, beating the Tigers 41-36.

“This was a good win for our girls,” said Tharptown Coach Tanna Benford. “We lost a tough one against Haleyville last week that we should have won, and this was a good rebound game.”

Were it not for the last minute one–point loss to Haleyville, the Wildcats would be 3-0. As it stands, Tharptown has still opened strong with wins over Red Bay as well as Shoals Christian, 55-37.

Tharptown and Red Bay were tied 9-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats outscored the Tigers 10-3 in the second quarter to take a 19-12 halftime lead.  Red Bay climbed back in the third quarter outscoring Tharptown 16-10 to cut the Wildcats lead to 29-28. Both teams battled through the fourth quarter with Red Bay taking a brief lead before Tharptown captured the win.

Autumn Montgomery led Tharptown with 12 points. Gracie Montgomery added nine points. Savanna Romans and Sarah Mansell scored eight points each. Kaitlyn Simmons added four points.

Sarah Eaton led Red Bay with 10 points. Kaylie Lindley added eight points, Emma Nichols had seven points, Madeline Ledbetter five points, Shelby Nichols four points and Jaycee Vinson two points.

Shoals Christian had no answer for Gracie Montgomery. The senior scored 28 points in the 55-37 win over the Flame.

Tharptown took an early 14-9 first quarter lead. Montgomery scored 10 of the Wildcats’ 12 points in the second quarter to help Tharptown extend their lead to 26-19. Montgomery scored 10 more points in the third quarter effectively putting the game away for Tharptown.

Autumn Montgomery and Mansell scored 10 points each. Simmons added four points, Harleigh Borden had two points, and Romans got one point.

RED BAY BOYS TOP THARPTOWN

The Red Bay Tigers topped the Tharptown Wildcats to win their season opener on the road 56-42.

Red Bay’s fast pace seemed to overwhelm Tharptown in the first quarter, as the Tigers raced out to a 13-7 lead. The Wildcats, however, settled down and mounted a second–quarter comeback. A mid-court buzzer beater by Tharptown’s Edwin Vela pulled the Wildcats to within three points, 26-23, at halftime.

Tharptown briefly tied the game early in the third quarter, but Red Bay extended the lead to 41-34. Carson Corum scored all eight of his points in the final period of play to help the Tigers put the game away.

Lawson Glover led Red Bay with 12 points. Elijah Luster, Corum and Landon Glover scored eight points each. Andrew Ray, Paden Allison and Bryson Hacker scored five points each. B.P. Blair added four points and Charlie Huffman one point.

Tharptown’s Dylan Valdez led all scorers with 15 points. Malachi Minor added 12 points. Vela hit three three-pointers for nine points, including the buzzer beater at halftime. Tyler Amos added four points, and Isaac Sanchez chipped in two points.
