Belgreen girls top Tharptown in softball action

The Belgreen Bulldogs held off a late Tharptown rally to beat the Wildcats 5-3 in a tournament held at Russellville High School Friday and Saturday.

Belgreen raced out to a 5-1 lead after two innings. Tharptown surged in the fifth but fell short.

Tharptown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Shaylee Wieting scored on a ground ball out. Belgreen took the lead in the bottom of the first when Emma Dempsey and Sydney Borden scored on walks to put the Bulldogs on top 2-1.

Belgreen extended that lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second inning with Katie Dempsey, Emma Dempsey and Borden all crossing the plate.

Tharptown tried to come back in the fifth inning. Leslie Staggs scored on an RBI-single by Wieting. Madison Vandiver scored on a fielder’s choice to make the score 5-3.

In other games, Belgreen beat Marion County 3-2 in the tournament. Sydney Borden had a big game for the Bulldogs, going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and scoring two runs. Borden homered and doubled.

Emma Dempsey struck out 10 Marion County hitters.
