COVID-19 cancels county events

Since the coronavirus spurred officials to issue a State of Emergency, schools have been closed, athletics have been suspended, and several events in Franklin County are rescheduling.

The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce is rescheduling its annual Franklin County Partnership Awards Banquet, originally scheduled for March 24.

Franklin County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Cassie Medley said the Chamber of Commerce is waiting before setting a new date for the banquet.

Chamber Easter egg hunts, set for Russellville, Red Bay and Phil Campbell, are also canceled for this year.

Russellville Middle School’s “Sleeping Beauty Kids,” previously scheduled for March 19, will be rescheduled for a later date.

“We don’t really know when we are looking at rescheduling but hopefully pretty soon after school comes back,” said RCS choral teacher Emily Rush. “Right now everyone is just taking it day by day.”

Rush said the RCS Auditorium is currently filled with decorations for Sleeping Beauty, where they will most likely stay until school returns.

She said she does not know what the musical will look like when it finally does happen because of the uncertainty the virus outbreak has caused, but she will do everything she can to make sure the show goes on.

“It might not be the same Russellville Middle School quality people are used to seeing with our productions, but hopefully we will be able to show off something,” Rush said.

Rush said there are currently no plans to reschedule “Aladdin Jr.,” set for April 27-28, but it will depend on when schools are able to return. For now, Rush said she is planning for “Aladdin Jr.” to continue preparation, with lots of choreography and music being sent to students’ Google classroom.

The American Cancer Society is postponing its Relay for Life survivor dinner, originally scheduled for April 21.

Belgreen High School has cancelled kindergarten registration for March 27, to be rescheduled for a later date.

The Ronnie McDowell show at the Historic Roxy Theater has been rescheduled for May 16. All tickets that have already been purchased for the March 21 show will be honored as is.

All Alabama high school athletics have been cancelled for two and a half weeks. The AHSAA announced that after the two and a half weeks, it will reevaluate safety conditions for sports.
