Club Chronicles: Cultura Garden Club highlights two Birmingham restaurant options

The February meeting of the Cultura Garden Club was held at the home of Martha Sibley with JoAnn Graham serving as co-hostess. Michelle Sibley, first vice president, called the meeting to order.

Sherry James presented information on two outstanding restaurants located in Birmingham: Post Office Pies and Twisted Root Burger Company.

Post Office Pies is located in a historic post office in the heart of the historic Birmingham neighborhood of Avondale. Brought to life by owners Mike Wilson and Brandon Cain of Saw’s Soul Kitchen and expert chef John Hall, Post Office Pies offers hand-tossed pizzas cooked to perfection in wood-fired brick ovens. USA Today has listed the Avondale restaurant as one of the top 30 pizzerias in the country.

Twisted Root Burger Co. is one of Birmingham’s best-kept secrets, tucked away on Rocky Ridge Road. With high-quality, made-to-order burgers, a “come as you are” environment and a strange reverence for Chuck Norris, there’s no place else quite like the Twisted Root. Originally opened in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas, Texas, in 2006 by chefs Jason Boso and Quincy Hart, the restaurant has experienced an incredible growth in not only Texas but Florida, Louisiana and Alabama.

Members discussed how visiting these restaurants would be a good road trip and experience for club women.

In the business session, final plans for the club’s bean luncheon fundraiser were discussed. The officer nomination committee was appointed. Darlene Hester reported the birdhouses at City Lake Park need to be cleaned out.

Next month plans will be discussed for cleaning out the pots downtown and planting spring flowers.

It was announced the Garden Club of Alabama District I spring meeting and luncheon will be held May 7 in Tuscumbia. Members were encouraged to make plans to attend.

The meeting was adjourned with the reading of Collect, and members wished a Happy Valentine’s Day.
