Voter turnout rises in general election

Franklin County saw a slight dip in registered voters during the general election Nov. 6 in comparison to the primary election June 5.

In June, approximately 18,000 residents were registered to vote; in November, approximately 17,000 residents were registered to vote.

Despite the lower registration count, more ballots were cast in the general election than in the primary election. In November more than 8,000 ballots were cast in Franklin County, while in June only a little more than 5,000 ballots were cast.

The county continued to sway Republican in the general election, as it did in the primary election. In the general election, 2,432 people voted straight Republican and 1,060 people voted straight Democratic. In the primary election 4,509 Republican ballots were cast, and 867 Democratic ballots were cast.

Franklin Countians voted Republican for Gov. Kay Ivey, Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth, Rep. Robert Aderholt, Attorney General Steve Marshall, Rep. Proncey Robertson, Rep. Jamie Kiel, Chief Justice Tom Parker, Associate Justice Jay Mitchell, Secretary of State John Merrill, State Auditor Jim Zeigler, Public Service Commissioner Jeremy Oden, Public Service Commissioner Chris Beeker Jr. and County Coroner Charles Adcox.

Kacey Hester Johnston won the Franklin County Board of Education seat on the Independent ticket, and Rep. Johnny Mack Morrow won the State Senate seat on the Democratic ticket; Sen. Larry Stutts, however, won the Senate position overall.
