Two local economic developers say Meridian's loss of a $35 million retirement community was a setback, but not for economic development.
Last week, city leaders announced that Arkansas-based Cooper Communities Inc. had abandoned plans to build 3,000 new homes and two new golf courses in southeast Meridian.
Economic developers had hoped the retirement community would lure thousands of residents and new businesses to Meridian.
Jones and EMBDC chairman Tommy Dulaney met with The Meridian Star's editorial board last week to discuss the loss of Cooper and other economic development issues.
Dulaney said the retirement community would have provided a boost to the local economy, but its loss won't deter industries from locating here.
Jones agreed.
Dulaney said he doesn't think the Cooper's decision gives Meridian a black eye.
