Nine weeks test caused the Lady Cougars of Newton County to be a few minutes late for the game, but they were ready to play as soon as they got off the bus at Northeast Park.
The Lady Cougars were unable to leave on time because of the tests but seemed to come with all the right answers as they beat Northeast Lauderdale 7-0 on Wednesday.
Newton County played very good defense and hit the ball well to take the win in a game between two strong softball teams.
Chaney held Northeast to seven hits in the game to pick up the win for the Lady Cougars. Good defense and trouble at the plate for the Lady Trojans helped secure the win for Newton County.
The Lady Cougars scored two runs in the top of the first to take an early lead. Chaney and Dominique Mapp singled with one out in the inning. Joy Cavenaugh brought in Chaney with a sacrifice fly and Mapp was able to score on an error to make the score 2-0.
Northeast was able to load the bases in the first inning, but could come away with no runs in the inning.
Newton County added two more runs in the fifth inning. Obreisha Davis singled and Holly Jackson followed with a single. Jessica Sheehan brought both runners in with a double to make the score 4-0.
The Lady Cougars finished off the game with a three-run sixth inning. Mapp doubled to start the inning and scored on a single by Cavenaugh. Shelly Ferguson doubled and Sylendria Johnson followed with an RBI single. Lauren Barrett brought in the third run with a sacrifice fly to make the final score 7-0.
Northeast drops to 21-7 on the season. It will play Meridian on Saturday before starting the playoffs on Tuesday night. Newton County improves to 3-4 on the year. The Lady Cougars will face Union tonight in a non-division game and will also start playoff action next week.
