Democratic plan may have backfired

Speaking of the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives, Democrats who opposed the confirmation of U.S. District Court Judge Charles Pickering to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals may have misplayed their hand.
Listening to the judge's Democratic opponents earlier this year, you would have thought that being a conservative, believing in God and having strong family values were character faults. Judge Pickering, Chip's father, was mocked in the national press and vilified by the liberal crowd.
It was a personal attack on the president's nominee.
Well, President Bush is coming to Mississippi on Aug. 7 to campaign for Chip Pickering. The effect of a popular president stumping for a young legislator running for re-election in a "new" district can hardly be overstated.
For his part, Shows may wish he hadn't made such catty remarks about Chip Pickering during a recent visit to NAS Meridian. He may wish he hadn't filed a nit-picking ethics complaint against him. And his 11th-hour endorsement of Chip Pickering's father didn't win him any fans, either.
